WORD Sunday 8th June

On Sunday we looked at Jesus the “Redeemer and Reward”

We looked at the subjects…

  • -We have been redeemed from what?
  • -We have been redeemed by what?
  • -We have been redeemed for what?

Looking at the redemption story in the Bible we find it covering page after page.. Some examples are ..

– Genesis 6-8

Abraham and Isaac

– Genesis 22

– Release of The Israelites from slavery.

– The bible calls Boaz the ‘kinsman redeemer’.  He bought the responsibility to care for the Naomi and Ruth and the right to marry Ruth. Even as a foreigner, this redemption into the family of Israel put Ruth into the lineage of King David and eventually the Lord Jesus Christ.

Where do we stop?  The story of redemption in the bible is entwined into every page!

2 Timothy 1:9: “He is the one who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not based on our works but on his own purpose and grace, granted to us in Christ Jesus before time began,”

It is as if God throughout the theatre of the Universe and all history has been playing out many different sub plots of redemption to point to the main/greater story.

Discovery Questions

Q) Can you think of other stories in the Bible that involve redemption?

Understanding Questions

Looking at the “From”, “By” and “For” from Sunday..

“We have been redeemed FROM what?”

(Matthew 12:36 ; Rom 3:22-23)

“We have been redeemed BY what?”

Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Q) To who was the ransom paid? Why?

“We have been redeemed FOR what?”

Ephesians 2:4 “But God, being rich in mercy, because of his great love with which he loved us, 2:5 even though we were dead in transgressions, made us alive together with Christ – by grace you are saved! – 2:6 and he raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 2:7 to demonstrate in the coming ages the surpassing wealth of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”

God is going to spend an eternity of ages showing us more and more the riches of His glory (the glory of His Grace) to satisfy our ever-growing capacities to see it and savour it and praise it “His grace.”

Jesus is both the grace given ransom and Prize to show us the highest point of God’s Grace.

Application Questions

Q) Are there people or situations that you know are helpless and far from God best with family, friends or work?

God’s redemption is available because of His great love.  Pray and work through practical ways to love and bring God into these situations.
